Did you know you can air fry a whole chicken? It’s a game-changer, especially if you’re craving that crispy skin and juicy meat, without the hassle of roasting a chicken in the oven. This Air Fryer Whole Chicken recipe is not only easy, but also yields an incredibly flavorful, and juicy chicken. It’s a protein-packed recipe that is also low-carb, and low in calories!

NOTE: Before you jump into this recipe, make sure your air fryer is at least 5.8 quarts or larger, to accommodate the size of the chicken.

What You Need to Make this Air Fryer Whole Chicken Recipe

Believe it or not, I own four air fryers in various sizes, most of which have been gifted to me by companies to review. This Cosori 5.8 Quart Air Fryer is my top pick for the following reasons:

  • Large, non-stick basket (5.8 quart) that’s large enough to feed up to 5 people.
  • 12 functions, including a function for preheating, frozen food and french fries.
  • Shake function (reminds you to shake the basket).
  • Cooks evenly.
  • Cleans up easily, and is dishwasher-safe.

Meat Thermometer

Given the variability in air fryer models and individual chicken sizes, relying solely on cooking times can sometimes lead to inconsistencies in doneness.

By incorporating a meat thermometer into the cooking process, you can:

  • Accurately monitor the internal temperature of the chicken, ensuring it reaches the recommended 165°F (73.9°C) for safe consumption. This helps prevent the risk of undercooking, which could result in foodborne illness, or overcooking, which can lead to dry and tough meat.
  • Enhance the safety of the dish, but also helps achieve optimal flavor and texture. By cooking the chicken to the precise temperature, you can preserve its natural juices and tenderness, resulting in a juicy and flavorful end product.

Why Air Fry a Whole Chicken?

Air frying a whole chicken offers several advantages:

  • It’s quicker than traditional roasting methods, cutting down on cooking time without sacrificing flavor or texture.
  • Air frying yields that coveted crispy skin, while keeping the meat inside moist and tender.
  • It’s a healthier option compared to deep frying, requiring minimal oil for that perfect crispiness.
  • You will only need a few ingredients to make this crispy chicken recipe.
  • This is great for both dinner and meal prep, and is a great alternative to a rotisserie chicken.

Tips

Here are some helpful tips to ensure your air fryer whole chicken turns out perfectly every time.

  • Use an air fryer that is at least 5.8 quarts or larger, to accommodate the size of the whole chicken.
  • Before seasoning, remember to check for, and remove any innards from the chicken cavity.
  • Pat both the inside and outside of the chicken dry with paper towels to ensure crispiness.
  • If the chicken is touching the top coil of the air fryer, gently press it down to crack the breast bone.
  • Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness, ensuring the internal temperature reaches 165°F (73.9°C) at the thickest part of the chicken. Check the internal temperature as it nears the recommended air fry time to ensure the chicken does not overcook.
  • Allow the chicken to rest for a few minutes before carving to allow the juices to redistribute, resulting in juicier meat.
  • Serve the air-fried chicken with your favorite sides for a delicious and satisfying meal.
  • Use the drippings to coat steamed vegetables or potatoes.

How to Make a Whole Chicken in the Air Fryer

  1. Prep the Chicken: Remove any innards from the chicken and pat both the inside and outside dry with paper towels. Season the inside of the cavity with 1/8 teaspoon of salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Stuff the cavity with the garlic, lemon halves and fresh herbs.
  2. Season the Chicken: In a bowl, mix together salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. Brush the outside of the chicken with olive oil. Sprinkle this spice mixture all over the chicken, pressing gently to adhere.
  3. Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for five minutes.
  4. Air Fry the Chicken: Once preheated, spray the air fryer basket with non-stick spray. Place the chicken breast side down in the basket. If it’s touching the top coil, gently press down to fit. Air fry for 20 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
  5. Flip and Continue Cooking: After 20 minutes, carefully flip the chicken. Air fry for another 30-40 minutes at 350°F (177°C), or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C), at the thickest part of the chicken.

How to Serve and Store Air Fryer Chicken

Pair this succulent air fryer whole chicken with your favorite sides like roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes or a fresh green salad for a satisfying meal.

Here are a few more serving options:

Leftovers

  • Allow the chicken to cool to room temperature before storing.
  • Remove any remaining meat from the bones and separate it into smaller portions, if desired.
  • Place the leftover chicken in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag.
  • Store the chicken in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Use the leftover chicken to make chicken salad sandwiches, hearty chicken soup, or even add it to rice bowls for a quick, flavorful and protein-rich meal.
