- If prepping in advance, wait to add the dressing until just before serving to keep the lettuce crisp.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I have to chop the meat and cheese? No! Chopping is what gives this grinder its signature texture and ensures every bite has a little of everything. That said, you can layer the meat and cheese traditionally, if you prefer.
- Can this be made ahead of time? Yes. The chopped filling can be prepared up to a day in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Assemble the sandwiches just before serving to keep the bread from getting soggy.
- What’s the best lettuce to use? Romaine or iceberg works best because they stay crisp and hold up well once mixed with the dressing.
- Can I toast the rolls? Absolutely. Lightly toasting the rolls adds texture and helps prevent sogginess, especially if you’re serving the sandwiches right away.
- Is this served hot or cold? This Italian chopped grinder hoagie is typically served cold or at room temperature, but warmed rolls are a great option if you prefer.

Notes
- Prepping all of the ingredients before assembling the sandwiches will make for a more efficient process.
- Feel free to customize the ingredients to your liking. Olives, tomatoes and/or hot sauce are great additions.
- If you want to control the amount of dressing, prepare in a separate bowl and add to the sandwich ingredients gradually, until you achieve your desired consistency.
- Be careful not to add too much vinegar/submarine dressing as the mixture will become too watery and cause the bread to become soggy.
- Once all of the ingredients are combined, adjust the creaminess, if needed.
- For added texture, toast the rolls.
