This homemade Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing is thick, creamy, tangy, and packed with real blue cheese flavor. Made with simple ingredients and ready in minutes, it’s the kind of classic dressing that works just as well on salads, as it does drizzled over wings, burgers, or roasted vegetables. Using a good quality blue cheese gives this dressing a bold, authentic flavor that store-bought versions just can’t match.

Why You Will Love This Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe

  • Classic Steakhouse Flavor: This dressing delivers that rich, tangy blue cheese taste you expect from a good steakhouse blue cheese dressing, thanks to real Roquefort and a balanced buttermilk base.
  • Quick and Easy to Make: Everything comes together in one bowl or jar with no blender required, making this an easy homemade dressing you can prep in under 10 minutes.
  • Perfect Texture: Thick enough to cling to salads but still pourable, this buttermilk blue cheese dressing works as both a dressing and a dip.
  • Better Than Store-Bought: No preservatives, no fillers, just real ingredients and bold flavor you control.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Buttermilk – Substitute with ½ cup milk mixed with ½ tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar.
  • Sour Cream – Greek yogurt can be used for a slightly lighter version.
  • Mayonnaise – Avocado mayo or olive oil–based mayo, both work well.
  • Roquefort Blue Cheese – Gorgonzola or Danish blue cheese are good alternatives.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Soy sauce or tamari can be used in a pinch (use less).
  • Garlic Powder – Finely grated fresh garlic can be used, but use sparingly.

How to Prepare Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing

  1. Combine the buttermilk, sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and cracked black pepper in a bowl or jar.
  2. Mix until smooth and fully combined.
  3. Chunk the Roquefort blue cheese into the dressing, breaking it apart as much, or as little as you like.
  4. Stir gently to distribute the cheese.
  5. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to develop.

How to Serve and Store

  • Serve this buttermilk blue cheese dressing over crisp green salads, wedge salads, or chopped salads.
  • Use it as a dip for buffalo wings, chicken tenders, potato wedges, celery sticks, carrots, or fresh vegetables.
  • Drizzle over burgers, grilled steak, or roasted vegetables for extra flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Stir well before serving, as the dressing may thicken slightly as it chills.
  • Do not freeze, as the texture will separate once thawed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why shouldn’t I use pre-crumbled blue cheese? Pre-crumbled blue cheese is coated with anti-caking agents that prevent it from melting smoothly into the dressing. This can result in a grainy texture and muted flavor. Freshly crumbled blue cheese gives the best taste and consistency. If pre-crumbled is all you have, it will work, but the dressing won’t be as creamy.
  • How long does homemade blue cheese dressing last? Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, this dressing will last up to 5 days.
  • Can I make this dressing ahead of time? Yes. In fact, it tastes better after a few hours in the fridge once the flavors have had time to meld.
  • Is this dressing good as a dip? Absolutely. It’s perfect as a dip for buffalo wings, celery, carrots, or even fries.
  • Can I make this dressing smoother? If you prefer a smoother dressing, mash the blue cheese more finely or briefly blend part of the dressing, then stir the cheese back in.
