Ingredient Substitutions

  • Honey: Swap with maple syrup or agave nectar for a vegan-friendly option.
  • Sesame Oil: Regular or toasted sesame oil both work; toasted gives a deeper flavor.
  • Chili Crunch Oil: Use Sriracha, chili paste, or crushed red pepper flakes if you don’t have chili crunch oil.
  • Edamame: Although this recipe calls for edamame in shells, shelled edamame can also be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I make this ahead of time? This recipe is best enjoyed immediately, but you can prep the sauce in advance and toss with freshly steamed edamame before serving.
  • Can I use shelled edamame instead? Yes! Just steam or boil the shelled edamame and toss directly with the sauce for an easier-to-eat version.
  • What if I don’t like spicy food? Reduce or skip the chili crunch oil. The sauce will still have a sweet-salty balance without the heat.
  • Is this gluten-free? Yes, just use tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce.
