This Steak in Brown Gravy is a hearty, comforting, and budget-friendly dinner that’s flavorful and perfect for feeding a hungry family.

- 1 to 1 1/4 pound top round steak
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 white onion, minced
- 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
- 3 cups beef stock
- 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
- 1 green pepper, cut into four pieces
- 1 tomato, halved
- 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley, plus more for garnish
- cracked black pepper, for garnish
Instructions
- Slice the steak into thin strips.
- Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Toss with flour to fully coat each piece.
- Heat the olive oil in a deep sauté pan.
- Add the steak and sear until almost fully cooked.
- Add the onions and mushrooms. Cook for a few minutes, until softened.
- Pour in beef stock and Worcestershire sauce. Scrape up any browned bits from the pan.
- Add the green pepper and halved tomato.
- Partially cover and simmer on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the steak is tender. This will take about 30 minutes, or so.
- Remove green pepper and crush any large tomato pieces with the back of a spoon.
- Stir in fresh parsley.
- Serve over steamed rice or buttered noodles, garnished with more parsley.

Notes
- If using a different cut of meat, adjust the cook time, accordingly.
- Feel free to leave out the mushrooms.
- To make this dish gluten-free, use a gluten-free substitute for the flour and make sure you are using a gluten-free Worcestershire sauce.
- Simmer until the steak is tender (you should be able to cut the steak with a spoon).
- To use a slow cooker, sear the meat, onions and mushrooms first, then add to a slow cooker with the remaining ingredients. Cook on low for about 7 hours.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, thicken with a cornstarch slurry after the dish has simmered long enough for the steak to become tender.
- Spoon over rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower, or even risotto.
