This Steak in Brown Gravy is a hearty, comforting, and budget-friendly dinner that’s flavorful and perfect for feeding a hungry family.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 to 1 1/4 pound top round steak
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 white onion, minced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cups beef stock
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 green pepper, cut into four pieces
  • 1 tomato, halved
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley, plus more for garnish
  • cracked black pepper, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Slice the steak into thin strips.
  2. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Toss with flour to fully coat each piece.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a deep sauté pan.
  5. Add the steak and sear until almost fully cooked.
  6. Add the onions and mushrooms. Cook for a few minutes, until softened.
  7. Pour in beef stock and Worcestershire sauce. Scrape up any browned bits from the pan.
  8. Add the green pepper and halved tomato.
  9. Partially cover and simmer on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the steak is tender. This will take about 30 minutes, or so.
  10. Remove green pepper and crush any large tomato pieces with the back of a spoon.
  11. Stir in fresh parsley.
  12. Serve over steamed rice or buttered noodles, garnished with more parsley.
  13. ENJOY!

Notes

  • If using a different cut of meat, adjust the cook time, accordingly.
  • Feel free to leave out the mushrooms.
  • To make this dish gluten-free, use a gluten-free substitute for the flour and make sure you are using a gluten-free Worcestershire sauce.
  • Simmer until the steak is tender (you should be able to cut the steak with a spoon).
  • To use a slow cooker, sear the meat, onions and mushrooms first, then add to a slow cooker with the remaining ingredients. Cook on low for about 7 hours.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, thicken with a cornstarch slurry after the dish has simmered long enough for the steak to become tender.
  • Spoon over rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower, or even risotto.
