Description

Crispy Vidalia Onion Rings with a light golden coating and sweet flavor, served with an easy homemade dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 large Vidalia onions
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons Sriracha
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup rice flour or cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • oil for frying

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • 3/4 cup mayo
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons ground horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine all of the ingredients for the dipping sauce. Mix well and refrigerate while you prepare the onion rings.
  2. Heat oil in a deep pan or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Slice the Vidalia onions into thick rings and separate them.
  4. In one bowl, whisk together the flour, rice flour, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  5. Whisk together the buttermilk and Sriracha into a second bowl.
  6. Place the onion rings into the buttermilk mixture. Coat well.
  7. Transfer to the flour mixture and coat well (you may have to do this in batches). Shake off any excess flour.
  8. Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, in batches. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  9. Fry until golden brown and crispy. Turning often. About 4-6 minutes.
  10. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate. Salt immediately.
  11. Serve hot with the prepared dipping sauce.
  12. ENJOY!

Notes

  • Keep oil temperature steady for even frying.
  • Slice onions evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Shake off excess flour before frying.
