Description

If you love sweet, salt and savory flavor profiles, you are going to fall in love with this recipe for Shallot Bacon Jam. It’s relatively easy to prepare and can be enjoyed alone on toast or crackers, or serve up in a tart.

Ingredients

  • 5 slices thick-cut bacon, diced
  • 10 shallots, sliced thin
  • 1/2 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Crisp up the diced bacon. 
  2. Remove from pan.
  3. Turn down the heat to medium-low.
  4. Add the sliced shallots to the bacon fat.
  5. Cook low and slow until the shallots have caramelized. Stir often. (This may take at least a half hour).
  6. Add the brown sugar, maple syrup, crisp bacon, apple cider vinegar, black pepper and crushed red pepper to the caramelized shallots.
  7. Stir and allow the mixture to thicken to a jam-like consistency. This should only take a few minutes.
  8. SERVE and ENJOY!
